There are many places on the net to find music of different kinds as a fan and also to upload your own tracks and albums as a producer. Here at the Mp3 Downloads wiki site you can find up to date information and links to mp3 downloads, stores etc. So there are two types of people here…the fans and the artists. You have to really search the internet as there are so many sites and stores now. Is it becoming diluted and less profitable as so many stores are about pushing music to greater independency but less income? At least it isn't as centralised as it was and I doubt the big players like EMI and Universal etc. can ever reclaim their original monopolisation of the music market. Their strategy has been to streamline their artist-roster to just a few big names and milk them through their powers of mass-marketing. However, with the surge of the indies and the small artist in remote towns with internet access we suddenly have a great variety of music to choose from. This makes things more interesting in terms of stumbling upon new and exciting artists from anywhere in the world, especially via Myspace, but is this a good thing for the artists themselves? And does it make the music more difficult to approach and find for fans? Well I think from the artist's point of view it's all about internet self-promotion. The more you do and the more you know what to do, and the more you build your own fanbase then the higher the return. This is logical. The only problem I have with this, as an artist myself, is the transformation of artist into artist/pr man/marketer/promoter/salesman. The artist's role is transforming through the great power of internet into a much more beurocratic and promotional business role instead of just concentrating on what the artist does i.e. make music. We can do both…it's just we're not all cut out to do both…or some of us gradually get better at both sides. But constantly updating the myspace, the facebook, the image, the website content, twittering about it all, spending so much time adding new friends all gets a bit tiring…and it's constant. You stop shouting about your music…less people hear about it. These are just a few opinions from the artist/self-promoter perspective…I hope you find something of interest on this site.
Here's a link to some of my music:
- What do you think of MP3s?
- MP3s or Cds?
Music is a non-physical thing. It cannot be seen. It is ethereal. Only our ears can pick it up. So whether it is purchased as a physical product or an mp3 download has no impact on the music itself, however, many people like (and are still used to) the physical product..something you can own and hold, a physical memory of the band or musician. I think we are now in a time where the music consumer is generally happy with both. The internet of course can be used to find the physical products but as a lot of people (Ipods and djs) are using Mp3s now it would seem that music consumption is now a non-physical item process accessible just by clicking an mp3 file in your music folder in your computer. Music is music basically. Now with our ever accelerating technology mp3 download stores are popping up all over the net. Itunes and Beatport may be the current leaders in the MP3 world but the internet changes quickly over small amounts of time. One aim of this site will be to learn about these sites, enable access to many different music sites and mp3 retailers, possibly review and list them according to what genres of music they offer and give updates on the changes within this world.
